Those are some excellent questions, Terry! As you know, it takes more than a good voice to make it in this business (although it certainly doesn't hurt). For some, working from a home office is challenging in and of itself. There are always distractions, and it can be very tempting to get lost in daily chores that have nothing to do with work. Being an independent contractor requires self-discipline, persistence and consistency.

Secondly, self-starters need to be comfortable with uncertainty. There is no such thing as a predictable paycheck at the end of each month. Some weeks can be really slow. Sometimes everything needs to get done yesterday.

One other thing is very important: setting boundaries. There's always work to do, but there are only so many hours in a day. We need time to recharge our batteries and take our mind off the never ending stream of auditions and other promotional activities. And that's exactly what I intend to do right now!

Terry, great questions that are applicable to any type of business. One through three are especially important. Not being able to fully answer all the questions should not be a deterrent to starting in business. Maybe start in business part-time while still working full-time. Use the experience to answer all of the questions fully.
