Being a voice over artist is like being any other kind of artist – and the more you practice your art – the BETTER you will become!
I recommend imitating as many voices as you can. Seriously – just try to make your voice sound like the broadcasters you hear on the radio or TV. Don’t be shy or let yourself be shy or feel stupid about this – Just Do It!
Even if you can’t make your voice sound like the others, just the act of practicing it will increase your vocal-awareness and strengthen your “vocal-muscles”…
One of the things that has helped me a lot with my voice over skills is SINGING. Yep – it’s amazing how much doing a voice-over is like singing.
* The inflections
* The intonation
* The projection
If you have ever sung or are interested in developing your singing voice – singing is one of the FASTEST ways you can develop your voice over pipes!
Even if you don’t think you’re a very good singer, it’s okay let yourself sing along to your favorite songs, just as a way to warm up your voice.
Another great way to warm up your vocal chords before recording, is to simply recite your vowels a half a dozen times. “Ah Aaa, Eee, Oh, Oooo” – opening your mouth as wide as you can, to help relax your face and vocal muscles.
I’ll write again in a few days with some more pointers for you.
Until then keep practicing!
