If you want to be a professional voice over artist, you will need to be able to record your own voice.
Back in the “old days” when I was just starting out, we had to physically travel to a recording studio to do our voiceovers, but today with the advent of the internet and home-recording, it’s vitally important that you engineer your own recordings if you want to compete in this business.
If you are just getting started, there are a few free recording-tools you can use to practice with. You will need to have a microphone as well, and in the beginning, you can just use a headset or any old computer microphone until your ready to invest in professional equipment.
You might feel intimidated by the thought of recording and editing your own audio, but YOU CAN DO IT! Just like everything else I preach, you just need to practice at it.
A friend of mine gave me a free “How To” guide awhile back that explains how to use your PC’s built in sound-recorder to make simple recordings.
Check it out – it’s a FREE .pdf download that I use myself to make recordings for internet audio. (Right click on it to save to your hard drive)
How To Record Your Voice With “Sound Recorder”
Once you are ready to make more sophisticated recordings (that you can edit and add background music to) you will need multi-track editing software like Audacity. Again this is a FREE option that you can use to record and edit your voice overs.
…These 2 options are a good way for you to start building your demo and getting more experience.
But the time will come when you start making more money and you will NEED to provide a higher-quality recording for your clients. This will require that you invest in PROFESSIONAL recording equipment which includes a Condenser Microphone (like the one I use).
In summary, recording your own audio is an important part of being a successful voice over artist these days, so don’t be afraid to jump in and start recording as much as you can!
I will send you more information again soon.
Until then – keep practicing!
Here’s to your success,
~ Terry
