In ten key technology sectors, the twenty-three-county Corridor boasts 7,600 companies employing 135,000 high tech employees, or about 70 percent of Florida’s high tech employment.
From the state’s roots in Agritechnology to its historic leadership in Aviation & Aerospace, the Corridor has grown to prominence in Digital Media/Interactive Entertainment; Financial Services; Information Technology; Life Sciences & Medical Technologies. As well, companies excel here in Microelectronics/Nanotechnology; Modeling, Simulation & Training; Optics & Photonics; and, Sustainable Energy.
Higher Education
The Florida High Tech Corridor is anchored by three world-renowned research universities: the University of Central Florida, University of South Florida and University of Florida. Combined, these universities represent a research powerhouse … with total annual external research funding of one billion dollars. And while fundamental research is an important part of their missions, the universities extend their commitment to applied research through a unique matching grants research program. It puts faculty and graduate students to work side-by-side with Corridor high tech companies.
Also playing a crucial role in educating the tech workforce of tomorrow are the Corridor’s fourteen community colleges. Their advanced training programs in areas such as microelectronics, biotechnology, modeling, simulation and training, and digital media supply Corridor high tech companies with highly trained employees who are ready to hit the ground running.
Leisure Activities
In a state that offers unlimited leisure activities, the Florida High Tech Corridor shines like no other place. Where else can you find the world’s most popular theme parks, top-ranked beaches, countless golf courses and breathtaking natural settings tailor-made for camping, fishing and hiking?
With approximately 230-plus days of sunshine per year and temperate, snow-free winters, opportunities to get out and have fun are available year round.
And for those who would rather watch than play, the Corridor boasts professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey teams, as well as powerhouse collegiate sports programs.
Business Climate
What do you get when you combine top-notch research universities, an educated workforce, zero personal income taxes and a government that is committed to economic growth? The Florida High Tech Corridor.
Often recognized in national magazines and surveys as one of the nation’s top places to do business, the Florida High Tech Corridor offers many of the tangibles that make or break high tech companies.
Perhaps the most important of those is a state government that doesn’t impede business growth, rather fuels it with forward-thinking initiatives and investments. An example of Florida’s pro-business approach includes a $245 million economic development package that included a quick-action closing fund, a Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund, training incentives and a program to spur the creation of centers of excellence. Another great example is the state’s funding of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council’s Matching Grants Research Program, a unique initiative that fosters applied research between Corridor high tech companies and the University of Central Florida, University of South Florida and University of Florida.
General Information
Situated in the middle of Florida and stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida High Tech Corridor’s twenty-three counties are a diverse mix, ranging from the urban settings of Tampa and Orlando to the rural lifestyles of northern Central Florida and sun-soaked beachside cities and towns on both coasts.
The Corridor offers world-renowned educational institutions, an abundance of opportunities in high tech, endless, year-round recreational activities and a pro-business environment.
Another key to the Corridor’s emergence as a high tech hub is its history of private – public partnership. Nothing better exemplifies that than the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, a partnership involving more than twenty local and regional economic development organizations, three research universities and fourteen community colleges.
Established by the Florida legislature in 1996, the Florida High Tech Corridor Council’s mission is to attract, retain and grow high tech industry and the workforce to support it within the twenty-three-county Florida High Tech Corridor. To learn more about the council, visit FloridaHighTech.com.
