This is GOLDEN material for all Voice Over Actors!

…Here’s a very cool listen into a “Directed Session” with me, another voice actor, the producer and the client – all working together over the internet!

The voices are being recorded live by the producer – and you’re hearing my recording that was made over Skype. Notice how the producer and client are directing us (the voice talent) – and how we provide them with multiple takes – each one sounding a little different than the last…

This is a perfect example of how voice overs get done it the 21st century! icon wink Live Directed Voice Over Session

PLEASE NOTE: This is an adult session with real-pros, so you’ll have to pardon us on some of the language – I give this a PG-13 rating.

Great insight on a voiceover script. I like the feelings behind the words, this really helps understand the reflection needed in the voice. Live, cut and raw…can’t get better than that!

Very good and educative material, i’m just wandering what equipment was used: microphone, preamp, etc. Will be a very good idea for many people to know, maybe a step forward.

Thank you very much for this. It is really helpful to be able to hear what an actual recording session consists of.

What a great lesson in interpreting direction. I especially liked listening to the detailed questioning to get the background story before starting into the voice work. That’s really a sign of a professional vs. just jumping in. But why would that surprise me – after all one of the voice talents is Terry Daniel :-)

    Hi, Terry!

It was very cool indeed. I have a question: the voices were recorded through an ISDN line and the chat occured over Skype?

Thank you to share a session with us.

I really liked the way there was such a collaborative effort as this script came to life, with so many adaptations and nuances of the inflections making a subtle shift of meaning to the listener. Thanks for recording and sharing this session, Terry!

I am also interested in your answer to Silvio’s question above. ( “the voices were recorded through an ISDN line and the chat occured over Skype?”) And if so, has skype become somewhat of a chat standard?

Thank you so much for your time and generosity.

    Terry,
Great insight to the Voice Over Profession- it shows how much work it takes to get a quality final product. Thank you for the demonstration!

Hi I listened to your session with rehearsal and it sounded great. The script seems to be a bit brief. I think Meineke misses out by offering a contest for a million bucks when they could get more business by lowering their oil change price for six months. I do not think a contest will lure real business. The contest should be an extra. The script might need adjustment in my opinion. The script is their call not yours correct? Other than that it was a very good reading.

    Hey everyone!

Thanks for the great comments. The session was communicated over Skype but we were both recording into our software. I have a USB powered mixer, so it is easy to do that.

This was not an IDSN session. Thanks again for the kind words.

    To your success,

    Terry Daniel

This is very informative. The dialogue, the professionalism and the ease with which the adjustments were made provides a great deal of encouragement for us novices.

    Thank You!!

Thank you for that! I found it very insightful and helpful…I especially like the way you still give your input, but you give the producer and client exactly what they ask for.

Wow, this is a really great class. I’m just trying this business out and you really give some priceless coaching. I am a singer ,musician, and home record producer. This seem to be a natural home business for me. I have the gear and the ear. Now I have a great coach! You rock dude…………….

Very interesting to see what a real session consists of. It gives you a very good idea of what to expect if you really want to get into this business. It’s amazing to see how in about 40 minutes the backbone of a commercial was created and more so, over the internet. Realistically speaking, at what “stage” of one’s voice over career is an opportunity like this to be expected?

Thanks for the insight Terry. Just helps to reaffirm my notion that “I can do that!” You are a great guy for sharing this with future potential competitors and a good example for the voice-over industry in general.
