Re: Great game, but what happened to the music/sound and story? They leave a bit to be desired…
The story was fine for what it was, at least Link didn’t just collect 3 thingies get the sword and awaken a few more dudes liek he did in the past few games.

The music did it for me, I thought it was fine

Voice overs would have been a nice touch, but as long as Link doesn’t talk.

What are Watermarks and Why are Talent Using them in Custom Demos?

Greetings, Have you ever received a demo of your script from a talent only to find that there are beeps or sound effects included in the recording? These added audio clips are called “watermarks”. Many voice talent add these short sound bites with the intention of protecting their work while providing their sample at higher quality. Variations on Custom Demo Protection include:
  • Slight script alterations
  • Names changed or mispronounced on purpose
  • Music beds and sound effects
  • Communicating to you directly in the recording as well as reading the script
  • And rarely, submitting lower quality audio files

Although these may seem annoying, even distracting, they are in place for a good reason. While the Internet provides many opportunities for securing work, it has also unfortunately been used as a means of stealing creative products, including voice-over demos. This is particularly true of custom demos of shorter scripts such as telephone voicemail boxes and commercials. People who steal work are only a small margin of Internet users, but over the years, voice talent and other freelance creative professionals have learned the hard way, often by hearing their audition pieces used commercially without being paid for their services. sun block lady 730156 Re: Great game, but what happened to the music/sound and story? They leave a bit to be desired...Now keep in mind that the use of demo protection techniques does not reflect how talent feel about you as a person or about your job, it’s merely a professional decision. This is a very important distinction. What can you do about this? Don’t judge a talent by their demo recording alone if they took precautions. Take time to consider their voice type, interpretation, quote and proposal. Think of it more like them wearing a hard hat at a construction site or applying sun block while outdoors in the summer. If you need to present the audio submitted by talent to other decision makers, these precautions may make or break whether the talent qualifies to be presented as an option. If this is the case, contact the talent and share your situation with them and ask for another sample without alterations. I hope I have shed some light on why talent may incorporate these watermarks or script alterations into customized versions of your scripts. Does this give you a different perspective? How do you feel about watermarks or script alterations in custom demos of your script? Leave a comment! Best regards, Stephanie

Looking for voice over actors

Looking for voice over actors
We are holding some auditions this Sunday looking for some voice over people for a short animated project. We are not looking for narration VO or spokespeople, but rather comedy voices for a handful of wacky characters. A sense of humor is a must. Its a short project so recording won’t take long after we pick who works for what part, maybe a few hours at most? And there is pay for the main cast. I’d prefer people on the south side, but if you don’t mind traveling thats fine. If you have your own…

daCapo Voice Talent of the Year Awards, 2006

daCapo Voice Talent of the Year Awards, 2006
A big part of any success we have as a company is the talent that we regularly work with and hire. If we didn’t have access to a wide variety of skilled and unique voices, we could not do the work that we do! In order to recognize the contributions that our voice talents make to us, our clients, and the audio production industry (and to have a really good excuse to eat cake at 2:00 in the afternoon), we initiated the FIRST ANNUAL DACAPO PRODUCTIONS VOICE TALENT AWARDS!!!!

daCapo Voice Talent of the Year Awards, 2006 (Clint addresses the black-tie crowd at the awards ceremony)

The winners (talent of the year, and runner-up) were chosen based upon a complicated formula involving total number of projects voiced, total revenue earned, and some linear programming. Our runner up was… daCapo Voice Talent of the Year Awards, 2006 Monique LaCoste who has the added caché of being able to do excellent voice work in French and English (note the beautiful trophies these folks were presented with. You don’t find things like this at just any pawnshop, let me tell you!).

Our overall winner was… daCapo Voice Talent of the Year Awards, 2006 daCapo Voice Talent of the Year Awards, 2006 Gordon Tanner

Congratulations everyone! It has been great having the opportunity to work with you over the years!

re: The voices behind the machine

Hi Florian, yes I agree. And I would add that a sentence recorded by a good voice talent for a particular dialog state in a particular application is likely to be more contextually appropriate in terms of prosody, etc. – and hence more acceptable to callers – than the same sentence generated by a TTS system.

Hey, I was watching the ending credits of Futurama and I happened to see a name that caught my attention.  Actually, I dropped everything I had in my hand and crashed into the floor when I saw it.  The name I’m speaking of is John DiMaggio.  For those of you who do not know who that is, he is the voice talent behind Kimahri and Wakka from Final Fantasy X.  It’s been bugging me for quite some time now so I have to know; Is the same person? (Oh, and please spare me the snide remarks about how late I am to notice it.  I’m well aware of that)

I believe this is the same person.

New Year…Additional Opportunities
HOUSEKEEPING:

I want to thank and welcome aboard PowerTVMedia. I just contracted to provide voiceover services for their “High Octane” program…right up my alley! As well, XM Satellite Radio has renewed my contract through 2007! Just last week I finished recording a promo for a well known NASCAR driver and team…again, right up my alley.

YOUR BUSINESS:

If you are thinking, “we need some kind of change” or perhaps “we need to re-think our marketing strategy”, then I can’t encourage you enough to consider the professional voice talent. No matter what your application, there are numerous talent out there that can turn your ideas into marketing reality.

Here are a few folks I strongly recommend:

-Long form narration, audio books, training manuals etc.: Mr. Bob Souer (link lower right)

-Network promos, commercials etc., Mr. Leif Anders (link lower right)

-Teenage girl, cartoon voices etc., Ms. Kara Edwards (link lower right)

-My demos can be heard on my site as well (link lower right)

Now that you have settled in to the New Year a bit, evaluate where professional talent can work for you!

Ebay . Sister Wendy…

Ebay . Sister Wendy…
Here’s a fun little spec commercial I directed recently. This one was born on the back of Ebay.Museum (see 07.18.06 posting). Originally I was planning on peppering the Ebay.Museum spot with all sorts of quotes about art. This was meant to offset the ridiculousness of the bad art hanging in the museum. After cutting the spot I realized the museum commercial was stronger without the V.O. and abandoned the idea of voice overs.

However, when I was researching for quotes I came across this great little clip of the BBC’s Sister Wendy. Press “play” below to see my commercial…

She is in fact talking about Hans Holbein’s painting of King Henry the VII, but when I came across this segment I couldn’t resist. I thought this commercial was pretty funny, as did everyone else who saw it (a friend of mine pretty much choked to death on his beer while watching it)

So far I’ve taken a bit of flack from some industry insiders telling me that it’s not really a “director’s” piece. However I think it can show what you can do with a little creativity and a limited budget.

Political Ad Voice Talent I heard a great

Political Ad Voice Talent

I heard a great piece on NPR yesterday with two guys who do a ton of attack ad voice-overs.  Their normal voices were similar to their TV voices, but they both used subtle changes in pacing and breathing that transformed them from normal deep-voiced guys into all-knowing voices of serious condemnation.  Using those voices, they then read various nursery rhymes and turned them into attack ads.  Funny stuff.

There’s a woman who does a lot of the GOP ads here in Minnesota, and I’m sure lots of other places, too.  It’s hard to describe what she does, but it’s this weird sort of hiss or lisp or cutting off of the last part of a word.  It so perfectly captures the prudish, pious disgust that motives certain parts of the conservative frame of mind.  I’d love to know if that’s really how that woman talks or if she actually uses that voice intentionally.  She’s either a master of her trade or an actual pious, prudish woman full of disgust.

Both the guys on NPR said they really had to check their own politics at the door.  I suppose that’s true in a lot of jobs, and we all do check our politics at the door in a variety of situations, such as a Libertarian swingers party.  I have to think if you were a hard-core partisan it would be hard to not have second thoughts about literally being the voice of your opposition.  I’m not sure I could do it, although it’s entirely possible that getting paid like premium voice talent could influence my thinking on the subject.

Maxi Schwarz-Bastami: Thank you for the link, Nik, There is a lot of useful, common sense advice that goes beyond the particular niche of voice over. Gothic 3

Gothic 3
What a let down this game is. After all the hype and press about how this game was going to be better than Oblivion, it falls not short, but flat on its face. The game is extremely clunky, with a very slow quick load and normal load. It’s so slow in fact that I believe quick load and normal load are doing the exact same thing. The controls aren’t very good, the fighting is rather bad, the voice overs are awful, what part of this game was supposedly better than Oblivion?

Looking for Google Audio Ad Help?
Professional voiceover talent are prepared to meet the needs of marketers soon to be jumping on the Google Audio Ad bandwagon (www.Google.com). This new avenue of exposure for the marketer appears to be a great idea. This “bridge” between Google Ad Marketers and those who can bring their ideas to life is being approached with a good bit of enthusiasm by voice talent and audio production specialists.

Without doubt, hiring professional voice talent, audio production specialists etc. is of utmost importance. However, a quick word of caution:

-Talent/Production:
Be sure to watermark your creative child or you could have a bad day! (be sure to communicate this to your marketer first)

-Marketers:
Approaching this with a “the lowest bidder wins the gig” paradigm is not getting off on the right foot. While cost is always a point of consideration, there must be a balance. I would question the quote of a low-bidder…not to mention the quality of their work. A professional is worthy of professional rates. I don’t go looking for the cheapest doctor or the cheapest shade-tree mechanic, I look for qualified professionals…you would be wise to do the same when it come to your ad.

You CAN get good quality at a realatively reasonable rate.
